Why Custom Lab Benches?
Labs need to be able to provide their workers with a functional, safe working area. However, they also need to be much more than traditional lab furniture. Work surfaces and casework cabinetry are both essential parts of the lab workbench that require customization depending on the application. Lab benches designed to fit the needs of your lab are going to help your workers remain efficient and productive day after day. Here are a few reasons why your lab needs custom benches.
Every Lab is Different
Custom lab benches offer you the option that works best with your lab. For example, if you plan on expanding, you can try modular lab benches that grow with your organization.
Every lab has its own limitations when it comes to space. However, when you’re able to design custom furniture, you’ll find yourself with counters that are just the right height and tables and benches that can be mobile for a changing design.
It’s also important to note that every industry has its own requirements and standards when it comes to their lab furniture. A cannabis lab will need a different type of customization than a high school science lab, which means you shouldn’t go shopping for second-rate lab benches when you can have the ideal ones designed for you.
Custom lab benches are an advantage when you’re short on space. When you need storage but don’t have any viable options, you can choose to add storage cabinets to your lab benches that make finding the right equipment and instrumentation easy.
Standard lab tables are bulky and typically bolted to the floor, something that can be a real problem when you find yourself with less and less space as time goes on. With custom benches, you can design your lab your way and make room for cable management, a storage shelf for lab supplies, and the like.
Because your lab has to handle different research tasks and routines every day, it’s important that your benches can be flexible. They will have to accommodate new workers as the lab’s resources grow and are able to fit as much instrumentation and equipment as possible.
With mobile equipment tables, you can change the design of your lab any time and offer workers the ability to move around the lab without having to change benches.
A custom solution allows you to give your lab flexibility that changes with its needs.
Custom lab benches are made from high-quality, durable materials. Because each product is made with the clients’ needs in mind, you can rest assured knowing that your lab benches will be everything you need them to be and more.
In fact, when you get custom lab workbenches, you’ll get to choose the tabletops that work best for your industry. Whether your ideal furniture solutions require phenolic resin, epoxy, or any other type of chemical resistant countertop, you’ll know that the benches you’re working with are the best for your lab.

Lab Benches FAQ
A laboratory bench, also known as a lab bench, is a work table in a scientific laboratory that provides the space and surface for conducting tests and procedures, storing lab equipment, and creating workstations for technicians or students. These are mostly used in the chemical and biological sciences.
A lab bench is one of the most important components of any laboratory. This is where work is prepared, experiments are performed, readings are taken, and laboratory equipment is stored and used. Laboratories would be dysfunctional and inefficient without lab benches.
A laboratory is incomplete without lab tables and benches. In fact, because experiments and demonstrations take place on top of the lab furniture, they exemplify a science lab.
Lab tables are an essential component of any laboratory, but understanding their purpose and why each laboratory requires them is critical when deciding which science table to buy. Lab benches provide a workspace and a surface on which to perform tests and procedures. Many have base cabinet storage options as well.
When compared to standardized or older lab furniture, custom lab benches offer greater flexibility and configuration options. Additional modern design options can result in space savings, increased durability, and the ability to expand in the future as needed.
Different types of labs necessitate different work surface materials for laboratory benches and there are seven most commonly used countertop materials for scientific or industrial use. These include:
- Epoxy resin
- Phenolic resin
- Stainless steel
- Maple block also known as butcher block or woodblock
- Solid surface
- High-density polyethylene (HDPE)
- Electrostatic dissipative (ESD) laminate
Laboratory benches should be adjusted to the appropriate height for the task at hand. Use the following as a guideline, and adjust as needed depending on the task at hand.
It should be noted that the ideal setup would include multiple height lab benches to accommodate a wide range of users.
- Precision work requires a working height of 44 inches to 46 inches from the floor, 2 inches to 4 inches above elbow height.
- Light work requires a working height of 41 inches to 42 inches from the floor, equal to or slightly below elbow height.
- Heavy work requires a working height of 32 inches to 38 inches off the ground, 4 inches to 10 inches below elbow height.
The size of your lab bench is an important factor to consider. The majority of lab benches range in width from 24 inches to 36 inches, depth from 30 inches to 120 inches, and height from 30 inches to 36 inches.
The size of the bench is determined by the amount of available space in your laboratory or cleanroom. Furthermore, the depth of lab benches for various uses may vary, but your specific needs determine the length of the lab bench.
- Keep pipettes and tips close at hand.
- Solutions should be strategically stored.
- Keep lab notebooks separate from your main workspace.
- Make specific locations for general supplies.
- Organize your supplies based on how frequently you use them.
- Labeling, labeling, labeling.
- Conduct regular audits.
